Moving into apartment

Now that you have found your new apartment rental, it is time to plan your move. This is an exciting time. But you know no matter how hard you plan a move that there will always be unexpected things to deal with. As you get ready to pack up your things and get on the road, there are things you can do now and during your move to make sure it runs smoothly. Preplanning is one of the best ways to keep your cool on moving day. Here are a few tips to make your move a smooth one.

Confirm, Confirm, Confirm

Whether you are using a professional moving company or renting a truck and enlisting the help of your friends, you should confirm the move with the movers or truck rental company a week before the date. Also, you will want to reconfirm the evening before the move to make sure there are not any unexpected delays that have come up at the last moment.

You Belong in Pictures

If you are using a moving company, you will want to take photos of your valuable and fragile items before they arrive. From large screen televisions to antique furniture, you should take pictures before the move to prove they were not damaged in case something happens. This will help expedite any claims you need to file.

Color Coding

When you are packing for a move, you will mark each box with the room the items inside go in. In addition to writing on the box, you can assign each room a color. You can use a blue pen for the kitchen and red for the bedroom. If something happens in transit to blur the writing or wipe off part of it, the color will still be obvious.

One Essential Box

There are items that you cannot live without. From a set of clean towels to a coffee maker, there are things you want to be able to find within the first few hours of a move in. Take all of these items and place them together in one box that you can carry to your new apartment in your car. This will save a lot of scrambling for your morning cup of coffee.

Pet Anxiety

Moving is not just an exciting and stressful event for you. Your pets will experience it too. If you are able to, you will want to have your pet boarded on moving day. When the pet is in the home for the move, you will want to isolate him in one location like a bathroom. This will keep the pet from getting under foot of the movers or helpers and avoid the pet getting out of the house.

Signing Your Lease and Getting Your Keys

To save time and aggravation, you might consider signing your lease and getting your keys a few days before your actual move. This will allow you to have the electricity, water, cable and Internet connection turned on ahead of the move. You will not need to halt the moving process to get keys and figure out how getting in to the building works.

Your moving day does not have to be as stressful as you are afraid it might be. With a little preplanning and a cool head, you will be settled in your new home before you know it. When the unexpected does occur, you will want to take a deep breath, deal with it and move on to the next task.
